Artist Statement
My childhood was cut short when my family migrated to the US. The intense pressure to adapt to the language and customs of a new environment eliminated the simplicity of a typical child’s life. I am left with only faint memories of my childhood before that point and wonder what could have been.
My work investigates the line between imagination and memory, fact and fiction, and attempts to visualize how memories become figments, fractured and fabricated.
My images explore ideas of loss, memory, and perpetual re-creation of one’s identity. The raw stages and selective refinement of my work illustrates the evolution of a memory and feeling-- as it becomes undefined and dreamlike. This process reveals my thoughts about how the mind creates new memories from old ones, allowing them to remain in a state of constant evolution.
