Artist Statement
The abstract concept of spirituality emphasizes the spirit in human beings and diminishes the importance of material objects. Painting an image does something similar- it captures not only the representation of the object or person, but also the toil and spirit of the artist creating the work. My artwork explores the definition of spirituality as it pertains to the individual, and how someone that seems like just another everyday person to one can be an icon of reverence to another.
I am heavily influenced by my Russian Orthodox roots. Being constantly surrounded by these images has inspired the way I work and the way I perceive the world around me. Instead of making my iconography with the hand of God guiding me, I make them with my own mortal hands, devoid of any religious symbolism, bringing to life the saints of my personal world.
